Free film screening of 'Love & Mercy - The Life, Love & Genius of Brian Wilson' (2015)
Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys' creative & musical genius, paid a heavy price for his talent. During his peak artistic years in the 1960s his emerging psychosis, fuelled by trying to please his abusive father, drives him to a breakdown that would last for years. In the 1980s, with Brian barely functional under the thumb of an unscrupulous ''doctor", he meets and falls in love with Melinda. As their relationship grows, she observes Brian's crippling subservience to the abusive psychotherapist with growing alarm.
The film stars Paul Dano & John Cusack and features many of their fabulous songs.
The screening will be preceeded by a short singalong and followed by an afternoon tea.
This film is a taster for the upcoming Beach Boys Choir - an 8 wk course starting at the North Narrabeen Baptist Church Hall on Thursday 12 May. Enq: Kate Maclurcan (0412) 771 394
Love & Mercy captures with striking immediacy the unbound power of the artist in his element. - San Francisco Chronicle
It's the best musical biopic in decades. - Chicago Tribune
The beauty, and the horror, of Bill Pohlad's exhilarating and inventive Love & Mercy...is the sense it gives us of the world passing through Brian Wilson's ears. - Village Voice
It's a remarkable movie, the first of 2015 that I can't wait to see and hear again. - Tampa Bay Times
It’s difficult to make a visually dynamic movie about people listening. But that’s precisely what Pohlad has done with both sensitivity and audaciousness, on the one hand attuning his protagonist to the music of the spheres, and on the other bearing witness to his deepest isolation and sadness. - Washington Post
