Daniel Rojas

Daniel Rojas has cultivated an interest in the indigenous, folk and popular music of Latin America, particularly of Peru and the Caribbean.

He has won several first prizes and was a participant in the MSO 21st Century Young Composers Programme as well as many other workshops. He has received commissions from the MSO, SYO, SSO Fellows, Ars Musica Australis, Kammer Ensemble, Omega Ensemble, Chronology Arts, Zubin Kanga, Claire Edwardes, and the Prima Musica Philharmonic Orchestra of Gent, Belgium. His larger works include two piano concertos, the most recent of which was composed for the Sydney Youth Orchestra with Konstantin Shamrai as soloist; and a marimba concerto commissioned by Claire Edwardes.

Maria and Daniel first worked together when Daniel performed his Piano Concerto no. 1 with North Sydney Symphony, with Maria as Concertmaster. It was immediately clear that the musical connection between the two was quite extraordinary. They soon continued working together in the tango ensemble Orquesta La Luna, which has been performing with outstanding success and causing quite a stir in Sydney’s tango community.

The two then decided to build on their natural rapport by working as a duo. The result is what you will hear in their Humph Hall recital, when they will bring to the stage a collection of the most enduring music for violin and piano, the dramatic, the heartfelt, the nostalgic and the virtuosic.

Works such as Elgar’s Salut d’amore, Khachaturian’s Sabre Dance, Ponce’s Estrellita, the heart-stopping Carmen Fantasy by Sarasate as well as some authentic Tangos and newly-penned works by Daniel Rojas himself.

“Maria Lindsay, violinist par excellence, [played] with passion, flair and grace. Maria is a wonderful world-class violinist.” - Anthony Harkin (What’s On Sydney September 2016)

“Maria Lindsay displayed a masterly understanding of animating the notes off the paper and into people’s souls.  Maria’s voice-like capabilities brought lyricism to the forefront.  Maria’s technique appeared limitless without ever disregarding the narrative of the pieces. - Anthony Harkin (What’s On Sydney November 2016)

"[Daniel Rojas is] clearly a master of his instrument and in no way ashamed to push the boundaries." - The AU Review

"Energetic and empathetic. [Daniel Rojas] played with enormous authority and exceptional technique - at times shimmering and birdlike, at other times blisteringly fast and joyously expressive when it came to the Latin-American dance rhythms." - Lynne Lancaster (Sydney Arts Guide)
